The researcher of religious sciences said, “Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) is the Sheikh of the Companions, and he is one of the Companions who is oppressed in history. Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) is the victim of distortion and Nawasib.”

Committee of Theology and Beliefs/Proof of Abu Talib’s faith in Sunni scholars’ words between 2nd, 15th centuries AH

The meeting of the 4th committee of the “International Conference of Hazrat Abu Talib, the Supporter of the Great Prophet (p.b.u.h)” entitled “Committee of Theology and Beliefs” was held on Wednesday evening March 10, 2021, in Shahid Sadr Hall in Imam Khomeini Higher Education Complex.

The chairman of the committee was Hojat al-Islam Sadegh Akhavan, the judge was Hojat al-Islam Reza Berenjkar, and its secretary was Hojat al-Islam Muhammad Reza Al-e Ayub.

In this committee, Hojat al-Islam Mohammad Ali Moraweji Tabasi presented his article entitled “Proof of the faith of Abu Talib (a.s.) in the words of Sunni scholars from the 2nd to the 15th century AH”.

“Many Sunni scholars, from different Sunni schools, including Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali, believed in the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.). In the article “Proof of the faith of Abu Talib (a.s.) in the words of Sunni scholars from the 2nd to the 15th century AH”, I presented a list of these scholars, along with their biographies. In this article, the names of 35 Sunni scholars from the 2nd to the 15th century are mentioned. These scholars believed in the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (AS) in different centuries and 16 of them were Shafi'is,” he stated in this committee, referring to the belief of Sunni scholars in the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.).

“In all centuries, there were Sunni scholars who believed in the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.), and expressed this belief and argued for it. The belief of Sunni scholars in the faith of Abu Talib (a.s.) was a deep-rooted belief, and to prove their belief, these scholars have referred to the verses of the Quran, the marriage sermon which Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) read on the wedding of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) and Hazrat Khadijeh (a.s.), and the consensus of the AhlulBayt (a.s.),” Moraweji Tabasi continued.

“To prove the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.), some Sunni scholars said that AhlulBayt (a.s.) are of the Thaqalayn, and we have a duty to adhere to their opinion. While, to prove the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.), some other Sunni scholars referred to the issue of Rajʽa (Second Coming, or the return to life of Shiite Imams (a.s.) after their death or martyrdom), however, the issue of Rajʽa is one of the beliefs of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) school (Shia school),” added the researcher of religious sciences.

“Some Sunni scholars said, “If Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) was an infidel, he would not have allowed the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) to speak against idols.” While some other Sunni scholars said, “How can someone like Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.), who spent his life defending the Prophet (p.b.u.h), suffer divine punishment in this world and the hereafter?”” he continued.

“Hadiths were among the other arguments of Sunni scholars to prove the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.). For example, Jalal al-Din Suyuti, one of the Sunni Shafi'i scholars, has narrated a Qudsi Hadith (a hadith which is attributed to God) with the theme “Fire is forbidden for the one who supported you”, and the supporter of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h), was Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.),” Moraweji Tabasi added.

“The behavior, speech and poems of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) were among the arguments of Sunni scholars to prove his faith, and they have cited the Lamia ode in this regard. Ibn Kathir, a Sunni scholar, considered the value of the Lamia ode to be higher than that of the Mu’allaqat al-Saba’ (The Seven Suspended Odes or The Seven Hanging Poems were hung on in the Kaaba in Mecca). Also, the lack of a report on the idolatry of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.), as well as his Taqya (ostensible denial of religious belief) to save the life of the Prophet (p.b.u.h), were among the reasons of the other Sunni scholars for the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.),” he stated, referring to the Lamia ode of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.).

“A significant number of Sunni scholars believe in the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.). In this case, the fact that he is one of the companions of the Prophet is automatically proved. For more than 40 years, he was a companion and helper of the Prophet (p.b.u.h). Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) is the Sheikh of the Companions, and he is one of the Companions who is oppressed in history. Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) is the victim of distortion and Nawasib,” he mentioned.

“The Sunni scholars mentioned in the article “Proof of the faith of Abu Talib (a.s.) in the words of Sunni scholars from the 2nd to the 15th century AH”, should be categorized in order for the article to be usable. Also, the arguments mentioned in this article need to be strengthened. This article proves that there is no consensus among the Sunnis about the unbelief of Abu Talib (a.s.),” said Hojat al-Islam Reza Berenjkar in the final part of the committee meeting.
