Poetry, Literature Committee of Hazrat Abu Talib Conference/Study of praises for Prophet in Abu Talib’s Book of Poems

“Some of the poems in praise of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) are sincere, and we can see this kind of sincere praise of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) in the poems of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.),” said the researcher of the religious sciences.

Poetry, Literature Committee of Hazrat Abu Talib Conference/Study of praises for Prophet in Abu Talib’s Book of Poems

The 3rd meeting of the International Conference of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.), the Supporter of the Great Prophet (p.b.u.h), entitled the Committee of Poetry and Literature was held on Tuesday evening, March 9, 2021, in Shahid Sadr Hall in Imam Khomeini Higher Education Complex.

The chairman of the committee was Ayatollah Mohammad Saeed Nomani, the judge was Dr. Baqer Ghorbani Zarrin, a member of the faculty of Islamic Azad University Central Tehran Branch, and its secretary was Hojat al-Islam Valiullah Madanipour.

Deputy Secretary-General and Deputy of Cultural Affairs of the AhlulBayt (a.s.) World Assembly, Hojat al-Islam “Ahmad Ahmadi Tabar, and the Director-General of Research of the Assembly, Hojat al-Islam “Sayed Mohammad Reza Al-e Ayub” were also present in this committee.

Following the committee session, “Hossein Mohtadi” presented his article entitled “Study of the praises for Prophet in the divan (book of poems) of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.)”.

“Some people have written poems in praise of the Prophet to save their lives. Others have written poems in praise of the Prophet for material motives.  However, some of the poems in praise of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) are sincere, and we can see this kind of sincere praise of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) in the poems of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.),” he said, referring to the various poems praising the Prophet (p.b.u.h).

“There are several different divans (book of poems) in which the poems of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) have been collected. The Divan of “Ali Ibn Hamza Basri” has the most poems by Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.),” Mohtadi continued.

“The poems of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) in praise of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) can be divided into two parts: poems before the Be’that of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h), and poems after the Be’that of the Prophet (p.b.u.h). In the poems before the Be’that, the paternalistic view of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) towards Prophet Mohammad (p.b.u.h) is prominent and in these poems, Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) has referred to the conspiracies (of Mushrekin) against the Prophet (p.b.u.h). However, Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) in his poems in praise of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) after the Be’that, has addressed the mission of the Prophet (p.b.u.h), which proves the faith of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.),” added the researcher of religious sciences.

“As a child, Prophet Mohammad (p.b.u.h) had a trip to the Levant with his uncle Abu Talib (a.s.), during which a piece of cloud always cast a shadow over the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h), an event that surprised everyone. A Christian monk named “Bahira” saw this miracle and said to Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.), “This child is the last prophet, leave here because the enemies will decide to kill him”. Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) has referred to this story in his poems before the Be’that,” Mohtadi stated, referring to the miracle of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) before the Be’that.

“Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) seeks refuge in Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) in troubles. When there was a famine in Mecca, Abu Talib (a.s.) took the Prophet (p.b.u.h) to the Kaaba. As a child, Prophet Muhammad prayed near the Kaaba. Due to the prayer of the Prophet, it rained a lot and that rain provided the needs of the people of Mecca for many years. This story was also one of the cases mentioned in the poems of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) in praise of the Prophet (p.b.u.h) before the Be’that,” he continued.

“In his poems after the Be’that, Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) explicitly refers to Hazrat Muhammad (p.b.u.h) as a Prophet. With these poems, the faith of Hazrat Aboutaleb (a.s.) can be proved. In other poems, Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) asks his children to always help the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) and support him,” added the researcher of religious sciences.

“We do not see “ghazal” (a form of poetry) in the Divan of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.); Rather, his poetry is an example of committed literature,” he mentioned.

“He was known as a sage and incomparable figure and despite his material poverty, he became Sayed of Quraysh. Abu Talib (a.s.) paid more attention to Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) than he did to his own children,” stated Ayatollah Nomani, the chairman of this committee in the final part of the session, referring to the characteristics of Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.).

“Some Sunnis say that Abu Talib’s defense of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) was not due to family ties. But this is not the case and Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.) had a special view of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h) from the very beginning and before his Be’that,” Ayatollah Nomani concluded.
